Technical SEO Audit

Technical SEO done right

A technical SEO audit is like sending your website to a doctor for a check-up, but to see if there are any problems that might be holding it back from ranking higher in the search results.

During the audit different technical parts of the website are checked, like how it’s built, coded, and designed, to discover any hidden issues.

The report from the audit gives recommendations on how to fix any problems found so that the website can perform better in the search results.

The difference between an SEO and Technical SEO audit

There are two types of audits commonly used to evaluate websites, an SEO and a technical SEO audit. While both types of audits share similar outcomes, they have very different goals and timeframes.

A technical SEO audit focuses on how search engines see your website, which may be completely different from how you think they see it. Website visibility is the most important factor in ranking in the search results and is prioritized in a technical audit.

A technical audit uses different tools to test page performance, security, problems with internal and external links, and duplicate content, all of which affect how likely it is that search engines will recommend your website pages to others.

An SEO audit, on the other hand, is a broader evaluation that shows how users behave (Google Analytics), how many people visit the website (Google Search Console), and the content, keywords, and backlinks of the website. What is checked in an SEO audit depends a lot on the person doing the audit. As part of the SEO audit, the customer usually has to give the auditor access to their Google Search, Analytics, and WordPress accounts.

A similarity between the two is that the purpose of both audits is to get your website pages to rank higher in the search results and to get more traffic.

Please keep in mind that there is no industry standard that says one type of audit requires an ABC check and that another type of audit requires an XYZ check. When an audit is done, it takes competence and time. It also depends on the size, goal, and budget of the client’s website.

Technical SEO audit Highlights

Most people work on the front-end of a website, but it’s all built on a technical back-end foundation where the code, plugins, and content come together.

If you hire someone to build your website, their main concern is functionality. When someone builds their own website, they focus on structure and content.
However, the technical aspects that may be limiting the website’s visibility is often overlooked.

A technical SEO audit therefore identifies any technical issues that may hinder search engines from crawling, indexing, and ranking the website’s pages. Fixing technical SEO issues can be prioritized and fixed quite quickly.

SEO audit Highlights

Every website is created with the intention of achieving some sort of goal. The most common goal is selling a service or product, but there are also others such as brand awareness or growing a mailing list.

How are you achieving your goal? Does your content attract visitors?
Someone who works as an SEO implements changes to a website to drive more traffic to webpages through different strategies, such as internal linking, targeting specific keywords, and getting more backlinks.

An SEO audit identifies areas for improvement and develops a strategy to optimize the website’s SEO performance. The audit itself doesn’t necessarily take that long, but implementation takes time because changes made to the site need to be assessed.

So which type of audit do you need?

All plans to improve your website through SEO start with a technical SEO audit, whether you buy just a technical audit or start a 6- or 12-month contract with an agency. A technical audit is always done first. The reason is because there could be critical technical issues that make any other SEO efforts small in comparison. The technical audit is also used as a benchmark to measure the effectiveness of SEO efforts.

Think of it this way: A technical SEO audit makes what you already have the best and most visible it can be, while a general SEO audit will be used to create an SEO strategy to optimize and create content to attract new visitors over a longer period of time.

Be mindful that SEO agencies that are contracted often don’t do all the work themselves but rather outsource different types of work, such as the technical audit, hiring content writers for posts, and doing outreach for backlinks.

In summary, a technical SEO audit is always done first to find the most important problems, and action can be taken right away. If you want to improve SEO on your website even more and you don’t mind contracting with an SEO agency, a general website audit will be done, and it will help you come up with a long-term SEO strategy.

Technical SEO Audit Pricing

Choose a package according to your website size. All audits are conducted the same way with the same deliverables regardless of the price. No upsells, what you see is what we deliver.

If you’re not certain about which package to select, send us the website URL and we’ll check for you.

How we work

Our approach to SEO is all about making it easy for you. Most of our clients aren’t programmers or web-developers, so our goal is to give feedback that is actionable and for anyone with some basic WordPress skills.

We don’t give our clients confusing Excel data dumps. We create reports in Google Sheets based on metrics that affect website visibility and that highlight and prioritize SEO issues.

Are we a good fit for you?

Naturally, we’d like all our clients to be satisfied with the work we deliver. However, we understand that not every website will experience a large number of issues, and we therefore recommend that brand new websites hold off on buying an audit until the site is more established. Often technical issues arise from building your site, installing plugins, and generally adding content.

Good fit

Poor fit

Your website can be in a language other than English, however the website SEO reports will only be in English. If you are not sure about anything please send us a message.

How are we different?

Unlike many SEO agencies, we provide examples of all our deliverables. On this page you can find more information on exactly what we check, how we provide feedback, and how our reports look. Everything is very transparent.

We also believe in a once-off service fee for work done instead of a recurring monthly SEO fee. We think that this is more beneficial for our clients because the value provided is more clear and the SEO work is done immediately, leading to faster results instead of the work being dragged out.
